NYS Agricultural Literacy Week

During this year’s NYS Agricultural Literacy Week, our students learned about pumpkins, thanks to the New York State Agriculture in the Classroom program, which funds and provides a book and activity each year to help students explore a new fruit or vegetable grown in New York.
In Mrs. Pluta’s kindergarten Health and Wellness class and Ms. DeSouza’s first and second grade Horticulture class, students read “The Pie That Molly Grew,” by Sue Heavenrich, a story that introduced them to the life cycle of pumpkins. As the weather warms, students will plant pumpkin seeds to observe the growth process firsthand. Special thanks to Ms. Marta Blanco, MS, NDTR, CLC, the senior bilingual nutritionist from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, for generously providing the book to help celebrate this year’s Agricultural Literacy Week.
